This course is one of three writing courses in the ELC Online English Language Program: Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced.

Basic Writing Course
TOEFL Entry Level 250
This course is designed for developing writing skills at the beginner level for students who have the ability to read simple sentences and instructions. The student will start by learning the parts of speech and the formation of simple compound sentences. In addition, the student will learn to produce linked sentences in a paragraph and write guided compositions. These writing tasks will be related to personal or familiar experiences. Participants will also learn how to fill in forms and write personal notes. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will receive a certificate of completion from the English Language Centre at the University of Victoria.

Intermediate Writing Course
TOEFL Entry Level 400
This course is designed to help students write specific types of paragraphs and a 250 to 500 word multi-paragraph essay. The course focuses on mastering writing in different styles of paragraphs. Various writing techniques are demonstrated to guide the student in developing clearer writing. Also, students will practice effective revision of their work. Students will be expected to write complex sentences using varied and interesting vocabulary. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will receive a certificate of completion from the English Language Centre at the University of Victoria.

Advanced Writing Course
TOEFL Entry Level 500
This course is designed to prepare students for writing in English at a college level. The student will develop a greater understanding of the writing process and master the basic components of multi-paragraph compositions. At this level, the students will learn to gather, select, and organize information to produce effective, coherent, and complex texts in the form of essays, stories, and reports of at least 500 to 750 words. The compositions will focus on concrete, abstract, and theoretical topics that include complex structures using appropriate vocabulary. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will receive a certificate of completion from the English Language Centre at the University of Victoria.
