Sentence Combining: Part 2

 
 

Examples of sentence-combining methods that produce complex sentences:

1. Use adjective clauses or phrases to link ideas.

I live in a house.

The house was built in 1900.

The house that I live in was built in 1900.
(adjective clause = that I live in)

The car is parked in the driveway.

The car is red.

The car which is parked in the driveway is red.
(adjective clause = which is parked in the driveway)

The car parked in the driveway is red.
(adjective phrase = parked in the driveway)


2. Use adverb clauses or phrases to link ideas.

First, I graduated from university.

Then, I found a job.

After I graduated from university, I found a job.
(adverb clause = After I graduated from university)

After graduating from university, I found a job.
(adverb phrase = After graduating from university)


3. Use noun clauses to link ideas.

The teacher told the student something.

The teacher told the answer.

The answer was for the homework question.

The teacher told the student what the answer to the homework question was.
(noun clause = what the answer to the homework question was)

The tourist asked a question.

The tourist asked the bus driver.

The question was: "Where is the hotel?"

The tourist asked the bus driver where the hotel was.
(noun clause = where the hotel was)


4. Use linking words to join clauses.

I ate lunch.

Then I finished my work.

After I ate lunch, I finished my work.
(subordinate conjunction = After)

I ate lunch; afterwards, I finished my work.
(transition with punctuation = ; afterwards,)

I ate lunch; then, I finished my work.


5. Omit unnecessary or repeated words.

Mark works hard all day.

He gets home late in the evening.

Mark likes to watch TV.

He watches at home.

He watches in the evening.

He eats supper at the same time.

Late in the evening, after he gets home from working hard all day, Mark likes to watch TV while eating supper.
