  Examples of fragments and how to correct them:  
 

Fragment

While I am cooking.

Problem

Dependent clause is written as a complete sentence.

Solution Link the dependent clause with an appropriate independent clause. While I am cooking, you can set the table.
Remove the subordinate conjunction.
(The first sentence is a better solution!)
I am cooking.
Fragment Works very well.
Problem There is no subject.
Solution Add the subject. Jackie works very well.
Fragment Hoping to stay healthy.
Problem A gerund is used incorrectly. (This is a common cause of fragments.) The participle verb form is used without auxiliary verbs.
Solution Add a subject and an auxiliary verb.
Vera is hoping to stay healthy.
Link the fragment to an independent clause. Hoping to stay healthy, Vera takes many vitamins every day.
Make the fragment the subject and add a main verb. Hoping to stay healthy is everyone's desire.
Fragment There are many ways to learn English. For example, live in an English-speaking country, take an English course, or hire a private tutor.
Problem A list is written as a complete sentence.
Solution Link the list to the preceding sentence. There are many ways to learn English, for example, live in an English-speaking country, take an English course, or hire a private tutor.
Add a subject and a main verb. (The first sentence is a better solution.) You can live in an English-speaking country, take an English course, or hire a private tutor.
