Definition
Proof that you passed an official test on your skills.

Example
The network administrator has certification for many types of software and systems.

consultant

Definition
Someone who uses his or her IT knowledge to solve problems. Consultants are usually hired for one project at a time.

Example
The company hired a consultant to advise it on what type of computers to purchase for all of the staff.

database administrator (DBA)

Definition
Someone who builds and fixes databases.

Example
Our database administrator (DBA) is building a database for the glossary in the language course.

degree

Definition
Proof that you graduated from a university or college program.

Example
It is possible to have degrees in many subjects, such as history, computers, or science.

entry level

Definition
Jobs that do not require too much experience.

Example
Most entry level jobs are low paying, but they are a great way to get some work experience.

experience

Definition
The number of years you have worked in similar jobs.

Example
It is possible to have experience in many different kinds of work, such as in an office or in a factory.

hardware engineer

Someone who designs or improves digital devices, such as computers.

Example
The hardware engineer is designing video cards for the computer company.

management information systems (MIS) director

Someone who plans the IT policies for an entire organization.

Example
After gathering the necessary information, the management information systems (MIS) director decided on the policies for the organization.

network administrator

Someone who keeps a local area network (LAN) working properly.

Example
The network administrator in our office keeps our local area network working properly.

project manager

Someone who leads a team to accomplish a goal.

Example
The project manager helped the team understand how to complete the project by delegating tasks and assigning responsibility to each member of the team.

quality assurance (QA) specialist

Someone who tests software or hardware to find mistakes.

Example
John is a quality assurance (QA) specialist and he spends his work day testing software and hardware for mistakes.

recruiter

Definition
Someone who matches job seekers with employers. Also called a “headhunter”.

Example
The recruiter asked the young man many questions before she decided to give him a job application.

software engineer

Someone who plans large software projects.

Example
A software engineer is a person who plans large software projects.

systems analyst

Definition
Someone who finds the best way to meet a client's IT needs.

Example
The company hired a systems analyst to help identify its the best types of software and hardware for the company.

technical support representative (TSR)

Definition
Someone who helps others solve their software or hardware problems, usually over the phone or by e-mail.

Example
The technical support representative (TSR) working on the help desk solved my software problem in five minutes.
