Course Overview

Read this chart to see what you will work on in each unit.

Unit 1 — Learning

In this unit, you will listen to people talking about learning. You will work on listening for signs that tell you what a speaker is going to say next, and you will practice hearing linked sounds. You will study the grammatical use of gerunds and infinitives.
Unit 2 — Health

In this unit, you will listen to people talking about health. You will work on more signs that prepare you to understand a speaker's next idea, and you will practice hearing reduced sounds. You will study the grammatical use of the passive.
Unit 3 — Work

In this unit, you will listen to people talking about work. You will work on making inferences about the real meaning of the things that people are saying, and you will practice hearing changed sounds. You will study the grammatical use of words and phrases of contrast.
Unit 4 —Science and Nature

In this unit, you will listen to people talking about science and nature. You will work on deciding what is important of the things that people are saying, and you will practice hearing contractions with the auxiliary “have”. You will study the grammatical use of the past perfect tense.
Unit 5 — People

In this unit, you will listen to people talking about people. You will work on framing ideas while listening to people talking, and you will practice hearing contrastive sentence stress. You will study the grammatical use of the third conditional.
Unit 6 — Food

In this unit, you will listen to people talking about food. You will work on identifying a speaker's main ideas and supporting details, and you will practice hearing numbers. You will study the grammatical use of reported speech.
