Demonstratives

 
 

Definition

Demonstratives come before nouns. They show whether the nouns are near ("this", "these") or far ("that", "those").


Example

This dress here is very beautiful.
(The speaker is describing a dress close to her.)

That dress on the shelf is very beautiful.
(The speaker is describing a dress far from her.)


Explanation

Demonstratives:

  • identify the nouns being described.
  • come before nouns.
  • show the location of the nouns being described.
  • have plural and singular forms.
